Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is a condition associated with hypokalaemia and episodes of weakness which may be profound. The weakness does not usually involve bulbar and respiratory function.

This disorder is commonly caused by medication, especially diuretics. Potassium should be given before bicarbonate as bicarbonate can precipitate further hypokalaemia. Other ways of preventing acute exacerbations are avoiding heavy carbohydrate meals, a very low sodium diet and spironolactone.
