Mitral valve prolapse is associated with a risk of endocarditis, atrial septal defect
and the long QT syndrome. Squatting increases afterload and this leads
to an increase in the intensity of the murmur.
Mitral valve prolapse is commonly found in
patients with Marfan
syndrome, Ehlers- Danlos syndrome, and adult polycystic kidney disease, and occasionally hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
