Carcinoid syndrome. The carcinoid plaque is the characteristic lesion in carcinoid heart disease. Mediator (serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan, histamine) release into the hepatic vein from metastatic liver disease predisposes patients to right-sided cardiac lesions.
