Warfarin in the first trimester can cause fetal hypoplasia of the nose and limbs. After this period warfarin is associated with neurological damage
– mental retardation, microcephaly,
optic atrophy and blindness. There is an option to convert from heparin to warfarin in the third trimester,
but the patient will have to be
re-converted back to heparin before delivery.
