Haematin causes suppression of δ-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) synthetase activity results in decreased production of ALA and prophobilinogen (PBG).

PORPHYRIA

Infection, pregnancy, stress (eg argument) and drugs can precipitate an acute porphyria attack.

Common drugs which can precipitate a porphyria attack are: Barbiturates
Sulfonamides
chloroquine steroids
