Phaeochromocytoma is a tumour of the
adrenal medulla.
The adrenal cortex
produces aldosterone, cortisol (glucocorticoid) and adrenal
androgens. The medulla
produces adrenaline and noradrenaline. Phaeochromocytoma is associated with MEN II and von Hippel Lindau syndrome. There is an association with retinal, cerebral
and
renal haemangiomas. Diagnosis is
with raised urinary
catecholamines over 24
hours, and also MIBG scan
of the adrenals.
